Which Broadhead Should I Use For Pigs

Hunting wild hogs has quickly become one of the most popular events in our sport. While a blast to shoot, these animals are some of the toughest creatures on the planet and even an averaged sized hog can make an experienced bow hunter look like a rookie with a poorly placed shot.

The key to shot placement on wild hogs is being able to slip an arrow behind the last rib of the animal at a slightly quartering away angle. This is where the Reign Broadhead quickly becomes the best broadhead for hogs.

Shot Placement

It’s no lie that any broadhead on the market gives you the ability to take a quartering away shot. However, and this is the catch, how many times have you had an animal, especially a wild hog, slightly move right as you released your arrow? I’ve shot well over 200 wild hogs and have yet to have one stand still the whole time!

The beauty of Reign Broadhead’s Swiveltech blade is the allowance for your arrow to enter up to 3/4 of an inch off center on either side of the last rib while still remaining on its’ intended course to the hog’s heart. With other broadheads on the market your arrow will either be deflected off its’ original path or become lodged between the last two ribs without any penetration.

Blood Trails

Wild hogs are some of the fastest coagulating animals in North America. What does this mean? Basically a wild hog has so much greasy fat, in and under its’ skin, that he/she will clog the wound channel much quicker virtually eliminating any blood trail you might have been following.

With the deflection and non ability to swivel, most big name broadheads become lodged into the side of wild hogs leaving only one hole for the blood to exit through. The Reign Broadhead however, has the ability to stay on its’ intended course by going around bone and effectively exiting the animal on the opposite side. The ability to produce a complete passthrough gives the Reign Broadhead the upper hand when it comes to making hogs bleed.

Although it is science, it doesn’t take a scientist to figure out that two holes produce more blood than one!

If you are a diehard hog hunter or even a newbie to the game, do yourself a favor and follow the link below to buy some Reign Broadheads.

When Should I Fertilize My Food Plot

How many times have you bought a bag of food plot mix only to find out later that you really didn’t know how to grow it like the pros? Personally I have done this many times and until talking with my buddy Brooks Johnson and watching the Frigid Forage video on fertilizing food plots, I had no clue.

Testing your PH levels and know what type of fertilizer to use, which food plot works best in your area, and how much you need per acre are all key components to growing a successful food plot but the number one trick is to know when to fertilize and what type of fertilizer you need.

Take a few seconds to watch the video below and learn how the pros produce those lush food plots that we all watch on TV each week!

It’s no lie that with all the demand for the hot new Reign Broadheads, it is tough for EP Hunting to have them in brick and mortar stores across the U.S. Luckily the guys over at EP have come up with a great idea and have actually launched a new online store allowing the consumer to purchase directly from them!

Here’s the best part. Since this is the first time that EP Hunting will be heavily promoting their online sales, they are offering free shipping on the first 100 orders of Reign Broadheads! All you need to do upon checking out is enter the coupon code “free” in the coupon code box when directed to.

I have shot over 100 animals in the past couple years with the Reign Broadhead and I still haven’t lost one!!! Do yourself a favor, CLICK HERE and go buy a pack or two!

Making Trueflight flu flu arrows

Trueflight flu flu arrows

When I was at the ATA show I ran into Bob Link making some trueflight flu flu arrows. I fletch all my own arrows and I had to stop and watch the industry veteran in action. These flus flus are not just for recurves or longbows either. Feel free to let them rip at 350 FPS from any style rest. The True flight flu flu arrows Bob was making were different than the 5 and 6 fletch arrows you commonly see in stores.

They were a spiral wrapped arrow made from full length factory second feathers. They leave the bow faster and lose energy sooner. The Trueflight flu flu arrow is a better mouse trap. Trueflight grinds the spine very thin so the feather is very flexible and easily wraps around your arrow. He was doing them in batches of three with no special tools. A paint brush (bristle or foam), a can of Weldwood contact cement and an exacto knife were all he needed.

If you want to try a batch, Trueflight has agreed to pay the freight on enough feathers to do a dozen complete flu flu’s. Tell them Brooks sent you to get the free freight. The kids will love you.

The Best Turkey Food Plots in Texas

If you really love hunting turkeys, you may wonder what is the best turkey food plot in Texas. A quality turkey food plot for Texas will pull and hold birds all year long. Knowing what the birds are after throughout the changing seasons can help you understand which turkey food plot works best at different times of the year in Texas.

Spring turkey food plots in Texas

Spring turkey foods plots in Texas are all about new growth. The birds have been scratchin’ and clawing all winter long and are ready for the green to arrive. Cereal rye and winter wheat are at the top of the list for turkey food plots in Texas states. These high protein plots aid in egg production, and stay green and alive all winter long under the snow, to begin growing as soon as the soil temp hits the high 30′s. A fall (September 1 – 10) planting of either of these 2 grains will not only draw whitetails all fall, but it will also pull the turkeys like crazy in the early season. You can always find birds strutting on these first green fields, and they are a must have early season turkey food plot in the Texas.

Turkey food plots in Texas after green up

When the native grasses and forbes come to life, so do the insects that comprise a major part of a turkeys diet. Turkey’s time their poults arrival to coincide with the first big bug hatches. Grasshoppers and crickets put weight on the young birds quick and provide the protein a growing bird needs. If you want to help the birds out now, you need some perenial turkey food plots in Texas to draw the bugs that feed the poults. Set aside fields provide both cover and insects to the young birds, and if some clover and chicory is mixed in it’s all the better, but keep in mind a low mowed plot that looks nice wont hide the young birds from predation. Later on when the birds are a little bigger a lush field of clover is hard to beat when it comes to pulling turkeys. Let parts of your turkey food plots in Texas grow a little wild for both nesting and rearing cover.

Fall turkey food plots in Texas

Fall turkeys are building fat reserves and need carbs. Nothing can beat a corn field as far as turkey food plots in Texas go. The carb rich corn provides energy and thats what the birds need to fatten up and stay warm all winter. They will scratch that field every day all winter long as long as some of the corn is left in the field

Your turkey food plots in Texas will change with the seasons. Match what you plant in your turkey food plots and how you maintain it to hold the birds all year round.

I’ve been guiding and running hunts for all different species for the past 10 years. Throughout that time I have gone through hundreds of knives and scalpels trying to find the one that will last the longest while continuing to do its’ job. It’s taken me a while but I’ve finally found it!

Last week I was introduced to Brian “PigMan” Quaca when they came out to hunt at Big Johnson Outfitters. All week PigMan and Dap talked about a new knife they were using, made by Johnson Adventures Blades. Now being the PigMan we all know that Brian hunts hogs more than any other animal and if you know about hogs, they are the toughest (hide wise) animals that we have here in Texas. Brian also does a lot of work with hog dogs and he and Dap both told me that the Johnson Adventure “Bacon Maker” is their go to knife when the cards are on the table.

Fast forward to day 3 of their hunt and we are at a huge ranch in Borden County looking for Aoudad. About 4 hours into the hunt we spot a group of 3 trophy rams under a tree 657 yards away and an equal distance from any road that we would be able to drive down. In normal PigMan style, he and his crew pull out their new Twisted Pig rifles and lay the smack down to all three rams at over 600 yards. While this was an awesome experience getting to see the rams drop in their tracks at that distance, it also made the 25 aoudad rams I had had a part in guiding. Therefore I knew exactly what type of work we had in store and since there were no roads anywhere close, I knew we would be down there for a long time trying to cape the animals out.

Me and my buddy Colter Bedell started in on the first ram with some knives we had available in our pack. It literally took about 5 minutes before both of our knives were completely dull. If one of us would’ve slipped and hit our hand with the blade, there was a great chance we were leaving with nothing but a bruise!

By the time PigMan and the crew finished taking pictures, Matt Rogowski, cameraman of PigMan The Series, came over and handed me a brand new Johnson Adventures “Bacon Maker.” At the time I kind of laughed because it was a fold out pocket knife and in my experience these type of knives never last long when caping an animals as big as an aoudad. I was wrong!

Colter stabbed the aoudad with his knife we had been using and I quickly went to work with the “Bacon Maker.” We seriously finished caping out the second ram in half the time it took to do the first. Needless to say I was amazed at the sharpness and toughness of the Johnson Adventures Blade. Six days later I have still not resharpened the knife that Matt gave me and it will shave my arm smooth as a baby’s butt with no pull at all.

As always this is a completely unbiased opinion and myself nor Texasoutdoorsman has no contract with Johnson Adventures Blades. We receive $0 if you decide to go buy one. I simply no how bad it sucks to be stuck with a dull knife in the middle of nowhere. Do yourself a favor and go pick up a “Bacon Maker” today. You can thank me later!

Our good friend Dave Constantine as has just finished painting the Best Turkey Decoys. The attention to detail on this original carving is amazing. We feel you will not find a more accurate representation of a real life turkey than the Best Turkey decoy. The goal from the onset of this project has been to produce the most life like turkey decoy at a price the average joe can afford. We will be going to pick up the Best TurkeyDecoys at the end of the week and sending them off to Bill Willroth for his part of the story.
